🌿 Parkinson’s Disease (Kampavata)

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that mainly affects movement. It occurs when the brain cells that produce dopamine (a chemical messenger for movement) are damaged or lost.
In Ayurveda, it is compared to “Kampavata”, a disorder caused due to aggravated Vata dosha leading to tremors, stiffness, and imbalance in both body and mind.

Common Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

  • Tremors (shaking hands, arms, or legs, especially at rest)
  • Muscle stiffness or rigidity
  • Slowness of movement (Bradykinesia)
  • Difficulty in balance and walking
  • Changes in handwriting or speech
  • Fatigue, mood swings, anxiety, or depression

Causes of Parkinson’s Disease

  • Degeneration of nerve cells in the brain
  • Genetic or family history in some cases
  • Oxidative stress and toxin accumulation in the nervous system
  • Ageing – most common in people above 60 years
  • Weak digestion (Agni) leading to poor nutrition of brain tissues (Majja dhatu)

Panchvedam Approach for Parkinson’s Disease

While modern medicine manages symptoms, Ayurveda focuses on slowing progression, improving quality of life, and enhancing daily independence. At Panchvedam, we combine Panchkarma, herbal medicines, diet, and lifestyle changes for holistic care.

Our 4-Step Healing Process:

  1. Nadi Pariksha (Pulse Diagnosis) – To assess the imbalance of Vata and overall health.
  2. Panchkarma Therapies
    • Abhyanga (medicated oil massage) to reduce stiffness and nourish the nervous system.
    • Shirodhara (warm oil stream on forehead) for calming the mind and reducing tremors.
    • Basti Chikitsa (medicated enema) – the most effective therapy for balancing Vata disorders.
    • Nasya (herbal oil drops in the nose) to support brain functions.
  3. Herbal Medicines – Formulations with Ashwagandha, Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, and Guduchi to improve nervous strength and reduce tremors.
  4. Diet & Lifestyle Advice
    • Warm, nourishing foods like soups, khichdi, and ghee.
    • Avoid dry, cold, and stale food.
    • Gentle yoga and Pranayama (Anulom Vilom, Bhramari) for balance and relaxation.
    • Stress management and adequate sleep.

  • Holistic, side-effect free approach to manage symptoms
