🌿 Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata)

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. This results in pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, most commonly in the knees, hips, hands, and spine.

In Ayurveda, this condition is known as “Sandhigata Vata”, caused by aggravation of Vata dosha, leading to degeneration of joints, dryness, and loss of mobility.

Common Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Persistent joint pain, especially after activity
  • Morning stiffness and difficulty in movement
  • Swelling or tenderness around the affected joint
  • Crackling or grinding sound during joint movement (crepitus)
  • Reduced flexibility and difficulty in daily activities (walking, climbing stairs, sitting on the floor)

Causes of Osteoarthritis

  • Natural ageing process (wear and tear of joints)
  • Obesity – putting extra strain on joints
  • Previous joint injury or surgery
  • Hereditary factors
  • Sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercise

Panchvedam Approach for Osteoarthritis

At Panchvedam, our goal is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and slow down joint degeneration naturally. We use Panchkarma therapies, herbal medicines, and lifestyle changes for long-term results.

Our 4-Step Healing Process:

  1. Diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) – To assess the severity of degeneration and body constitution.
  2. Panchkarma Therapies
    • Abhyanga (warm medicated oil massage) to lubricate joints and reduce stiffness.
    • Swedan (herbal steam therapy) to ease pain and swelling.
    • Janu Basti (localized oil therapy for knees) for targeted relief.
    • Basti Chikitsa (medicated enema therapy) – considered highly effective for Vata disorders like Osteoarthritis.
  3. Herbal Medicines
    • Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu, Ashwagandha, Eranda and Nirgundi help reduce inflammation, nourish cartilage, and strengthen joints.
  4. Diet & Lifestyle Recommendations
    • Warm, light, and easily digestible meals.
    • Avoid sour, fermented, cold, and heavy foods.
    • Gentle yoga and Pranayama to improve joint flexibility and overall strength.
